Assessment Overview
-
For the formative, students will be creating a short 2-3 paragraph written analysis reflecting on their experiences during the visual text questioning activity.
-
Students will need to reference the various images that they encountered during a lesson plan on visual texts (please refer to lesson two: writing workshop), as well as utilize sources we encountered as a class.
-
Students must conclude their analysis by tying what they experienced and learned into how it relates to the importance of social activism, and end by justifying the importance of social activism in today’s climate pertaining to refugees.
Alignment with Goals and Standards
-
The goal of this assessment directly aligns with the NC Content Standards for ELA (see standards that are being referenced under Goal 2 page).
-
Students will analyze various primary sources through a multimodal lens. Students will be questioning the validity of the sources that they are analyzing.
-
Students will be participating in an activity that deals with reading and analyzing visual texts (please refer to lesson plan two). These visual texts will include a video from the Global Oneness Project, as well as images from a refugee photo gallery.
-
In viewing and analyzing these visual texts, students will be able to make connections between the characters from Refugee and the true stories of modern-day refugees.
-
As a class, we will discuss our initial reactions to the content of the video and take time to reflect on its content. The photo gallery exposes students to a wide variety of images that captures the day to day challenges that refugees face.
-
-
This assessment scaffolds students analysis and reflection of multiple sources while critiquing the validity. Students will be connecting these sources to the importance of social activism for refugees.
